sounds good, post would be the final test i think, OS doesnt really matter.

but would it be, machine is at the bios screen and we have to power off, dismantle then re-assemble the machine. but what is the point at which we say, yes, thats dismantled enough? every component (heatsink, cpu, daughter boards, ram etc) has been removed from each other and on the table or what?

I would say, everything (including cd/dvd drive and psu) removed from the case and on the table, each component is on its own and not connected to anything else, once verified by tournament leader (whom ever whats the job i guess) then the re-assembly can commence.

sound good?

What you suggest sounds good and works to me. What does everyone else think? Winner being the best time under 10 minutes and of course the machine correctly posting. Looks like a machine has been sourced but it will be god awful spec.

Fair enough.

It should have to POST and you should confirm all the components ARE connected, though. It's all well and good having a harddrive in but without the CD, a POSTing machine isn't useful still, since how are you supposed to install a useful OS on it otherwise? ;)

Wanting to stick with Windows rather than complicate things. There isn't time to do the OS install as well :)

i suppose we could have an OS on a flash drive, something linux based that wont take forever to boot.

I use one all the time for work, at least it would prove the majority or components (at least the important ones) are connected correctly.

See, I'd boot and jump into the BIOS. If you can change it to boot from CD, the drive's connected well enough for me.

most bios' let you set it to boot from the cd without a drive being installed

Guess it must be the old Intel boards that don't let you unless there's a CD drive, then.
