Quake III Arena Server at LlamaLAN 11 !!!

Post by YaZoR »

I'm wondering if enough people are interested in a Q3A server?

I'll be willing to set one up pre-configured for the LAN, either with CPMA/OSP/RA3 or just vanilla CTF/TDM/FFA.

KF: I was going to create a q3a linux server in a VM, and if possible you just slap her in Dave, and away we go (q3a doesn't need much so be a small VM with no more than 256mb RAM allocated). If enough interested would that be alright, or too cheeky? If not, localhosting shouldn't be bad, I was just thinking of a less hassle all setup and tested VM - Cheers

I can setup a VirtualBox or a VMware server. (You're running an ESX server ain't you?) Running either Slackware or cut down Fedora install.

It'll be pretty bare, 1 CPU, 256-512MB, couple of GB hard drive space, just the OS, no GUI. ssh daemon, and quake3arena server. Possibly running apache if I fancy running some stats off it. And maybe FTP so ppl can download mods/maps/patches off it incase auto-downloading doesn't work.
Oh no PB obviously. Anyone who does cheat would no doubt feel the wrath of the rest of us.

As for quakelive, I don't see how you could play it at a LAN anyway. You'd need loads of bandwidth to play online servers, and then you can't run servers yourself anyway. Well you _can_ run one locally, but will cause a headache for those who don't know how to use the console/commands. At least with Q3A, it has it's in game browser thats easy enough to search for servers and join.

Quakelive and Q3A are essentially the same game anyways aren't they?

Essentially, to the untrained eye, Q3A and QL are _exactly_ the same.

To those who religiously play it, there are subtle differences.

Though, if your good at one, you'll be good at the other.
If your turd at one, you'll be turd at both.

Right well I've got a VM setup running a couple of quake3 servers on linux.

Configured for ESX 3.x compatability
1 CPU
256MB RAM
1 SCSI drive at 8GB, (only using 1.5GB)
Fedora 10, no X11/GNOME/KDE
Quake III Arena 1.32c

Currently have set a FFA and a CTF server. Was going to do an instagib also ]=)

Right, all setup and working beautifully.

Running:
SSHd/vsFTPd - For admin and downloads of q3a mods/maps
Quake 3 FFA
Quake 3 CTF
Quake 3 CorkScrew Instagib
Quake 3 CPMA 1v1

If anyone has any q3a server/mod requests let me know. If enough people are interested I can sort it out.

As long as the maps don't have places to fall off and get -1's i'll be fine...

Typically I suicide about 10 times per game on QL atm!

Play corkscrew instagib then Andy. Only way you can die is from being shot with a railgun.
If you fall off a ledge, you spawn randomly on the map.
